Academic-Overview
|
Academic programmes at IIIT are designed to enable growth and learning in a highly focussed and application-based environment. This is achieved through a combination of formal lectures and hands-on experience in well equipped laboratories and through project activity, which will equip students to design and operate high-end computing systems.
The Institute offers courses at all levels - undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral. By the year 2007 the Institute is expected to have more than 1250 students on its rolls in various courses.

At present, the institute offers a 4-year B.Tech and 5-year Integrated B.Tech and M.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering in addition to 2 Year M.Tech, M.S. and Ph. D programmes. The institute has intense course work supported by a flexible curriculum. The curriculum moulds itself to the needs of individual students. This means that you are not bound by rules that dictate what courses to take at what time. If you come in with a specific goal in mind, you are free to chose a sequence of courses that would be optimal in realisation of your aim. The different types of courses are:
Compulsory Courses:
Each student has to take some compulsory courses in specific semesters. They aim to build the foundation of the student and provide him with the skillset necessary for every IT Professional. They pave the way for more challenging courses offered in the elective slots.
Compulsory and Flexibly Scheduled Courses:
Although these courses are a must for every student who passes out of this institute, they cover a very specific area of IT. So a student can reschedule them according to his priorities with the advice of his academic advisor. He can either take a course early if he wants to get into a particular field or postpone it to a later semester to allow himself to take any other elective/flexibly scheduled course in that slot.
Elective Courses:
Elective slots are provided to the student each semester starting with the fourth semester in the bachelor's programme and throughout the master's programmes. The electives are domain specific. Typically 8-10 elective courses are offered in each stream. They give the student an in depth knowledge of the particular field. It is advisable for each student to choose his field of interest and take elective courses in that field so that he or she can master. Many of these courses are highly research oriented. Yet others are application oriented and they essentially integrate several different disciplines in order to apply the techniques to solve problems in a specific area.
Humanities and Management Courses:
A complimentary set of courses focus on the development of the student as a human being. They also include courses like Organisational Behaviour and Management which ensure that every student passing out of the institute is capable of facing all the challenges of the industry.
Projects: All programmes lays great stress on hands-on exposure to research and development projects as a means of learning, Project work, therefore, can be a significant part of a course, a substitute for a course, extra load a student opts for, or a part of the required training during the course of the programme.
A student can also take projects instead of courses. To ensure that the students get sufficient breadth, project work instead of courses is allowed for upto two courses. Every student is expected to earn credit for a research oriented project in the final year.
The instutute lays great emphasis on students to undertake projects that have a social relevance. Real life problems are identified and students are encouraged to engineer innovative solutions to solve them, so as to contribute to society in a direct and effective manner.
A lot or research projects are also undertaken at IIIT, which aim to develop cutting edge technologies and expertise.
Students have the opportunity to take up internship programmes at various firms in course of their study, giving them a feel for working on projects in an industry environment. Many students have submitted research papers at reputed conferences.
