UG CURRICULUM
The Institute has innovative curricula, not available anywhere else in the country, which allow even the UG students to do research and development. Specially designed courses equip the student with knowledge of software environment and hardware design. As a result, when students work on their projects from their third semester, they are exceptionally well prepared.
SALIENT FEATURES:
The following features of our curriculum set us apart from other IT educational institutes in India:
-
Emphasis on research: Our curriculum encourages the students to get involved in R&D activities as early as possible, so that they can participate in the evolution of new ideas, and can acquire first-hand experience of how large systems are designed and implemented. To allow the students to immerse in R&D activities, our curriculum is deliberately designed to include the following two key aspects:
-
Flexible course scheduling: So that, for example, some compulsory courses may be taken in a later year.
-
Large number of electives: Our curriculum is structured to have a large number of electives in different categories like IT-electives, Open electives, etc. This lets the students tailor the curriculum to their own interests and the needs of the research projects.
-
Short-term courses or Modules : Our curriculum allows for courses that run for shorter durations within a semester, called modules. A module might run for a few weeks or more, and might try to cover a technology or a topic that does not require the full semester. Modules also take advantage of visitors who come to IIIT for short durations.
(A set of modules, covering 3 or 4 different but related topics, may sometimes be combined into a regular course.)
-
Independent Study and Mini Projects: Our curriculum allows a student to do a mini project or undertake an independent study at any time there is an elective slot. This lets the students get involved in the research and consultancy projects at the Institute. (However, a maximum of eight credits earned this way may count towards the UG degree requirements.) This is in addition to the Final Year Project which is required of all the students.
